Take the class. Music theory is very helpful for any instrument you’re trying to learn.
Being able to play by ear is a very excellent quality. But, understanding the mechanics of music can not help but make you a better musician no topic what instrument you play. The only people I know of who advise hostile to taking music theory in some form are those who have never taken it.
